The Issue

The distressing videos captured in the undercover footage depicted by BBC Africa Eye Documentary showcase the elderly residents of the PCEA Thogoto Care Home for the Aged being subjected to physical mistreatment by staff members. Additionally, their basic rights, including proper nutrition and medical attention, were egregiously violated. It is deeply disheartening to witness the elderly residents being subjected to such inhumane conditions, especially in a facility that should prioritize their well-being and care.

The allegations of staff members physically abusing and neglecting the elderly residents, as exposed in the investigation, are not only deeply concerning but also indicative of systemic failures within the care home's management and oversight.

In their right to reply officials from the home are on record denying the allegations of mistreatment and abuse.

Every individual, especially those who are elderly and vulnerable, deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and compassion. It is the moral and ethical responsibility of care facilities to uphold these principles and provide a safe and nurturing environment for their residents.

In light of these grave revelations, this petition demands:

1. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in collaboration with the Department of Social Development to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the allegations raised in the BBC Africa Eye report in regards to  PCEA Thogoto Care Home for the Aged.

2. The Department of Social Development under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to enforce regulations governing care homes. This includes ensuring that care homes meet standards of care and that residents' rights are

3. The Department of Social Development and Ministry of Health to implement robust oversight mechanisms to prevent any future instances of abuse and neglect and establish clear and transparent protocols for reporting and addressing concerns about resident well-being. The Department of Social Development should also work to ensure that the care home is properly staffed and that the staff are properly trained.

Let's demand swift action to rectify the issues and send a powerful message to authorities that mistreatment and neglect of elders won't be tolerated. Together, we can champion meaningful change, justice, and the protection of residents' rights and dignity.
