The Issue

Why this matters
Townley Grammar School is one of the largest secondary schools in Bexley, serving students from Bromley, Chislehurst, Sidcup, Bexleyheath, and Thamesmead. Every day, hundreds of students face longer, complicated, and potentially unsafe journeys because the Superloop SL3 bus passes by the school on Townley Road on its route but does not stop at the school’s bus stops (Townley Grammar school stops W and Y).

The problem

Students must take multiple buses or walk long distances, adding unnecessary time and risk to their journeys. Alternative bus routes are much slower and take longer. Local bus routes like the 132 and B12 are overcrowded at peak school times, creating safety and reliability issues.

The present alternative, Bus No.269  from Bromley to Bexley although accessible, stops at 40 locations, making the journey markedly long and arduous for students commuting daily from areas such as Bromley, Bickley, Chislehurst, Sidcup, Bexley.

 The solution:
We call on Transport for London (TfL) to:

-Add Stops W and Y (Townley Grammar School) to the SL3 bus route in both directions.
-Complete a safety and timetable assessment as soon as possible.
-Implement the change in the next 6 months

Why it’s achievable

The stops are directly on the SL3’s existing path, midway between Sidcup Station and Bexleyheath Library stops on this route. Stopping here would add at the most around one minute to journey times.

This is a low-cost, high-impact improvement for our community and making it much safer for the children attending the school. Further this fits very well with TFL's published objective for a wider utilization of the Super Loop network connecting the different boroughs of London in a wide circular network.

The benefits
✅ Safer, faster school commutes for students.
✅ Reduced overcrowding on other local bus routes.
✅ Encourages more young people to use public transport.

The realignment of the SL3 Bus Route to incorporate these crucial stops would not only save time for countless students but also enhance safety and convenience. A shorter, direct route means less time on the road and more security for the girls needing to travel early in the morning or return late in the afternoon.

Who we’re addressing:

-Transport for London (Bus Service Planning)
-London Borough of Bexley Council (Transport Strategy)
-London Assembly Members for Bexley & Bromley
