The Issue

To the City of Surrey

The removal of parking spaces in and around the 2900 block of 156th Street is continuing,  leading to real parking issues for residents who rely on vehicles for work and school due to lack of transit or car share options.

Over the past 5 years at least 20 parking spaces have been removed, many from indented parking areas originally intended that cars could park without affecting two directional traffic.

The closest shops and bus stops are 20 minutes walk away, in different directions.

The City continues to remove parking stalls along 156th and neighbouring streets, including Mountain View, Helc and Willowbrook.  The City has advised that this is due to visibility reasons and we have also been advised that better visibility causes vehicles to drive faster.

We all know that multiple vehicles park in the same spaces for weeks on end, indicating that these are not essential for every day use.

We petition the city to:

reinstate the lost stalls
look for ways to add additional parking in this area
lower the speed limit in this area
install speed bumps and additional pedestrian crossings if necessary to reduce speeds
