Add Pothole Alerts to Google Maps to Improve Road Safety

The Issue

Across the UK, potholes are damaging cars, increasing insurance claims, and making everyday driving more dangerous.

From city centres to rural A-roads, drivers are facing rising repair bills for tyres, alloys, suspension and tracking — often caused by potholes that appear overnight. Councils are under pressure, repair backlogs are growing, and drivers are left footing the bill.

Google Maps already allows users to report crashes, congestion and speed checks in real time. Adding a simple “Report Pothole” feature would be a practical and impactful improvement for UK road users.

A community-driven pothole alert system would:

• Warn drivers before costly damage occurs
• Reduce sudden swerving and near-miss incidents
• Help highlight problem areas for local authorities
• Provide useful, anonymised road condition data

This is not about criticising councils — it’s about using modern technology to improve road safety.

If millions of drivers can crowdsource traffic updates, we can crowdsource road hazards too.

We urge Google to introduce a pothole reporting and alert feature within Google Maps to better support drivers across the United Kingdom.

Sign to support safer roads and smarter navigation.
