2 years ago, when I was a primary 6 student considering GESS as one of my choice schools, the number of CCAs the school had was, to say the least, deeply disappointing. Even with a satisfying AL score of, back then, 15, the choices were still abysmally limited, impacting not just me, but all my friends who had joined the school as well!

Though in the end I had still chosen Gan Eng Seng School as my 1st choice school and 100% do not regret coming to this school, there is still the urge for me to stand up for the students that were to come.

School is a place for students to grow not only academically but also holistically, and co-curricular activities play a crucial role in that growth. These activities foster teamwork, nurture leadership, and offer a well-rounded educational experience. Research shows participation in co-curricular activities positively correlates with increased academic performance and higher self-esteem among students (National Federation of State High School Associations, 2019).

Yet, our school seriously lacks a variety of these stepping stones for growth. We believe that our education system should offer students a broader range of activities, which in turn provides richer opportunities for the exploration of talents and interests. We must ensure that our school offers more co-curricular activities, adding to the holistic development of our youth. 

Gan Eng Seng School highly emphasises on healthy living which includes not only physical wellness, but also metal wellness. For a school that is not only strict (in a good way) with their students, but also somewhat academically demanding, we believe that the school should also consider how adding more co-curricular activities would allow students to better relax their minds and balance between play and studies for their 4 years in there.

With consistent parent and community support, the school must ensure the best resources and facilities to lend support to these co-curricular activities.

Together, let's advocate for a comprehensive, vibrant, well-rounded education system within GESS that encourages students to cultivate a healthy mental well-being, hone their talents, and grow in confidence. Together, let us move ever ONWARD!
