Add at least two bike racks on each public bus
The Issue
Throughout my daily routine, I’ve realized that navigating the urban expanse without a car poses significant challenges. Living in a city where public transport doesn't always connect those last crucial miles, my bicycle becomes my go-to option. However, the current transportation infrastructure lacks adequate support for cyclists like me, especially the youth who depend on these services for mobility when their parents are unavailable to drive them.
Currently, many public buses are only equipped with single bike racks, which often fill up quickly and limit the options for passengers who wish to combine cycling with public transportation. This limitation inconveniences numerous individuals who, just like me, find themselves stranded at pivotal points of their journeys, unable to continue due to the absence of a simple solution—an additional bike rack.
Statistics have consistently highlighted the growing number of cyclists who depend on integrating bicycles with public transport. According to a study by the National Association of City Transportation Officials, there was a 73% increase in cycling in large cities over the past decade. This trend underscores the need to adapt our services to suit the evolving transportation preferences.
By equipping each public bus with at least two bike racks, we not only support sustainable travel and environmental initiatives but also prioritize the convenience and accessibility for everyone in our community. These additional racks would facilitate seamless travel, reduce road congestion, and encourage healthy activity among citizens.
I urge our city’s transportation authority to consider this vital improvement. It’s a small but significant step that could lead to a more interconnected and efficient public transportation network.
Please support this initiative by signing the petition. Together, we can advocate for a more cyclist-friendly community that respects and accommodates all forms of mobility.
