Swissvale Borough council voted this evening to pay their half of a traffic study to determine whether a crosswalk is warranted at Braddock & Sanders. I believe that they and Edgewood were moved to do this by our petition. Thank you for supporting this effort! Thanks to petition-signers Sarah & Henry for turning out and speaking this evening and helping me and Erin convince the boroughs to spend money on a traffic study. What to expect in the future: The traffic study will be done by CEC engineering some time before May 2017. The traffic safety committee of which I’m a part will ask the boroughs for a copy of the traffic study results. It appears the boroughs intend to follow the recommendations of the traffic study, whatever they are. Those conclusions could say: 1) a crosswalk is inadvisable here because it would be unsafe. [In this case probably we lose.] 2) a crosswalk is advisable here. 3) a crosswalk and more are advisable here (perhaps curb extensions or a flashing pedestrian beacon). [In cases (2) or (3) they would seek funding for the construction work, and we could encourage them to build the improvements as soon as possible; if there are options to choose from, perhaps we could advise.] We don’t yet know what the schedule might be for construction, but since the other crosswalk work planned for Braddock Ave by the boroughs (see map at http://goo.gl/W8RFVo) is predicted for 2018, probably no sooner than that. I plan to post an update in a few months after we get the results of the traffic study.
