Adapt the AI Adventures Class to Remove AI Art and Educate About the Effects of AI
The Issue
Currently, the AI Adventures class is marketed as a fun, laid-back class where the students explore different forms of AI. The class shines a light on the positive effects of AI, especially how it is "transforming industries, inspiring creativity, and shaping our world." The class is also listed as a recommended class for students wishing to pursue a career as an artist. In reality, the course description and accounts from students speaking with the teacher paint the class as playing with AI, and not diving into the complexities of a rapidly growing technology. While it can be useful in certain situations such as brainstorming; educating on the environmental impact, art theft, amount of misinformation it spreads, and ethical concerns with replacing jobs is equally as important. Its consideration as a course to help an art career is also extremely problematic. This decision has no respect to actual artists, and encourages stealing, plagiarizing, and lying your way through a creative career, replacing actual emotion with selfish intentions.
Our main goals are to: 1.) Remove the AI art from the class, 2.) Have both pros and cons discussed in class to fully explore AI, and 3.) To change the marketing of the class from that of a fun program to mess around with AI that encourages the widespread use of AI, to the same professional standard every other course title is held to. If these do not happen, using AI as a cop out for assignments and art will become more normalized among students, and the serious implications of the continued use of AI will fail to be recognized.
This petition needs to gain many signatures very quickly, as we hope to meet with the administrators before scheduling is completed, to hopefully avoid added stress on the administrators and students wishing to enroll in the course.
