At a recent Board of Supervisors meeting there appeared to be a welcome turn of events as one Supervisors stated he did not want to go through this again in 2025 and another requested the county attorney to investigate approaches to legally stop the ocean-class cruise industry in Yorktown. We know that this industry has sidestepped local governments in several instances to promote their own agenda, despite community outcry.  We also know that a Princess lobbyist has talked about a 2025 Yorktown pilot program on at least two occasions. For these reasons - our mission is not yet complete.

We are cautiously optimistic and recognize this could be a turning point on this issue for the county. We truly hope this is the case, but we are requesting the following from the Board of Supervisors:

  1. Continue to investigate and pursue legal means to protect Yorktown from this industry and execute this with a sense of urgency.
  2. Make it clear to Princess Cruise’s that York County appreciated their interest in making Yorktown a port of call, but the Board no longer sees the mega-cruise ship business approach as being compatible with our small historic community.
  3. Direct York County Economic Development and Tourism to stop all pursuit of ocean-class mega-ships like Princess, Holland American, and others.
  4. Be fully transparent with the citizens of York County providing regular status on this community concern beyond the limited time in BoS meetings.
