Accountability for Veterinary Medicine - Prevent Tragic Losses

Accountability for Veterinary Medicine - Prevent Tragic Losses
The Issue
I, as a devastated pet owner, am starting this petition to bring attention to the minimal standards of practice and inadequate disciplinary actions within the field of veterinary medicine. The tragic loss of my beloved cat, Stella, due to negligence and lack of accountability at Warm Springs Pet Hospital, located in Fremont, CA, has compelled me to take action.
On what should have been a routine teeth cleaning procedure for Stella, I received a devastating phone call just minutes after being assured that she was out of surgery and recovering well. The unimaginable news shattered my world - Stella had gone into cardiac arrest due to postoperative complications that went unnoticed. She was left all alone and when they found her, she was unresponsive and her gums were slightly blue. She had already passed. According to World Small Animal Veterinary Association's Global Dental Guidelines, "Anesthetic monitoring is significantly correlated with decreased morbidity & mortality. Veterinarians should not blame "anesthesia" itself for accidental deaths in the perioperative period since most anesthetic deaths occur when dogs & cats are not being closely monitored or often due to human errors." Despite their efforts to resuscitate her for ten minutes, it was too late. I lost my sweet baby girl because of the lack of proper monitoring postoperatively. I am certain if monitoring standards were required by law, Stella would still be here.
This heart-wrenching experience is not an isolated incident; countless pet owners have faced similar tragedies due to dangerous practices within veterinary medicine. It is time we demand accountability from veterinarians in order to prevent further unnecessary losses.
Accordingly, I urge all compassionate individuals who care about the well-being and safety of our beloved pets to support this petition demanding stricter standards and disciplinary actions within veterinary medicine.
1) Strengthen Standards: It is imperative that regulatory bodies establish comprehensive guidelines for veterinary practices across the board. These guidelines should include mandatory protocols for preoperative evaluations, surgical procedures, postoperative monitoring, and emergency response plans.
2) Enhanced Monitoring: Veterinarians must be required by law or regulation to implement advanced monitoring systems during surgeries or procedures that carry any potential risks. This will ensure early detection and prompt intervention in case complications arise.
3) Continuing Education: Continuous professional development should be mandated for all veterinarians throughout their careers. This will promote up-to-date knowledge on best practices and encourage ongoing improvement in patient care.
4) Transparent Reporting System: Establishing a centralized reporting system for veterinary malpractice and negligence will enable pet owners to make informed decisions when choosing a veterinarian. This system should include public access to disciplinary actions taken against veterinarians found guilty of misconduct.
We cannot allow these dangerous practices to persist any longer. Our pets deserve the highest level of care, and it is our responsibility to demand change within the veterinary profession.
Sign this petition today if you believe in holding veterinarians accountable for their actions, preventing further tragedies, and ensuring the well-being of our beloved pets. Together, we can make a difference!
