Dignity After Abuse: Demand Police Investigations and Review Commissioner Commit to Police Accountability:

Imagine surviving multiple sexual assaults, only to find yourself forced to defend your very existence instead of receiving the support you desperately need from the Police and legal services. 

This petition calls on the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) to uphold their statutory obligations by addressing critical procedural failures in their oversight of Police Scotland.

 

 

 

These failures include

the omission of essential evidence,

the neglect of vulnerable individuals' needs,

a refusal to meet their procedural obligations in complaint-handling processes.

 

What We Demand to Ensure Fairness, Thoroughness, and Public Safety:

• Stop relying on police statements over objective evidence—balanced and fair investigations depend on it.
• Implement safeguards to protect vulnerable complainants from systemic harm and institutional failings.
• Establish an independent mechanism to review PIRC decisions, which are currently deemed final, leaving no oversight to address failures to meet procedural requirements.
• Ensure accountability without relying on judicial review, a prohibitively costly option inaccessible to most members of the public. (Starts at £10K.)
• Introduce consequences when mandates are not reached, such as the failure to include all relevant evidence, like NHS reports, in complaint investigations.

Failure to act perpetuates a dangerous precedent, undermining public trust and leaving vulnerable individuals at risk.
