Abolish the 'Year Back' System in Karnataka Higher Education

The Issue

Many students in Karnataka face immense challenges due to the "year back" system in place in higher education institutions. I am writing to shed light on this issue, which affects countless students, both personally and profoundly, as they struggle to advance in their academic and professional lives due to this outdated system.

Currently, if a student in Karnataka's higher education system is unable to pass a few subjects, they are required to repeat the entire academic year. This results in the unfortunate loss of a whole year, causing an increased financial burden on families who have to pay additional tuition and fees for the repeated year. Many families already face financial strains, and this system only exacerbates these challenges.

Beyond the monetary costs, the "year back" system takes a severe toll on students' mental health. Students experience undue stress, humiliation, and embarrassment in front of their parents and peers. The pressure to succeed is already high, and the fear of being held back can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Furthermore, the delay in graduation caused by this system affects students' employability and career opportunities. In today's competitive job market, every year counts, and losing time due to an outdated educational system can put students at a disadvantage compared to their peers globally.

We urge the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi Ji, and the Karnataka State Higher Education Council to reconsider and abolish the "year back" system. Instead, a more lenient and supportive approach such as providing additional mentoring, tuition support, or supplementary exams could be implemented to help students succeed without losing precious academic time.

By signing this petition, you join us in advocating for a fair and supportive education system that nurtures student potential without undue punishment. Your support will be a significant step towards educational reform in Karnataka. Please sign and help us bring about this crucial change.
