This petition comes from a very personal place. As a vegetarian doing a school project, I was forced to confront the horrifying realities of slaughterhouses. The inhumane practices have been seared into my mind - images of horses, cows, pigs, chickens and other innocent creatures being killed in the most horrifying ways.

Animals in slaughterhouses are routinely subjected to harsh conditions and brutally killed. According to a study by Animal Welfare Institute, a high percentage of animals slaughtered for meat suffer immensely before their death. Furthermore, it exposes humans to zoonotic diseases, and the United Nations reports that slaughterhouses have significant environmental impacts, including water pollution and deforestation.

But the changes we seek are not impractical. We can opt for plant-based diets, launch more vegan restaurants, and invest in lab-grown or cell-based meats. Crucially, we have the legal power to close these slaughterhouses, should enough of us decide it is time.
