As a concerned citizen who deeply values national sovereignty, I firmly believe that the European Union should be abolished. The European Union, which began as a promising project aimed at fostering unity and cooperation among European countries, has grown into a vast political body that often overrides the individual rights and freedoms of its member states. This centralization of power has led to numerous instances where national governments find themselves shackled, unable to implement policies that reflect the will of their own citizens.

The promise of the European Union, to create prosperity and stability, has strayed from its path. For many countries, being a part of the EU has resulted in relinquishing crucial aspects of national control. Regulations set by the EU frequently take precedence over those determined by national governments. This erodes the ability of elected representatives to properly respond to the needs and wishes of their constituents. The consequences? Policies that may benefit a majority in the EU but not the unique socio-economic contexts of individual countries, creating division and dissatisfaction among residents.

Consider the economic struggles tied to the adoption of the Euro in some countries, which has at times resulted in inflation and economic hardship rather than prosperity. Additionally, in matters of immigration, security, and fiscal policy, the one-size-fits-all approach is often flawed and ineffective. Communities across Europe have felt the impact of broad-brush policies that do not adequately address local realities.

Our countries deserve the right to self-governance. Sovereignty should be vested in the people of each nation, allowing them to shape their future without unwarranted interference from an overarching institution. It’s time for governments to regain the ability to effectively represent and execute the will of their people.
