Abolish Stamp Duty for First Time Home Buyers up to £500,000 in the UK

The Issue

We would like to call attention to the plight of first-time home buyers in the UK and advocate for the elimination of stamp duty for homes priced up to £500,000. In this period of economic recovery, promoting homeownership can serve to stimulate economic growth. Yet, for many starters, the hurdle of buying including stamp duty can be prohibitive, often leading to people becoming trapped in a rental cycle. According to a 2020 report by the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the average age of a first-time buyer in the UK is 30-32, with many saving for years to afford it. For many this is still unachievable in line with average salaries.  A dispensation on stamp duty would effectively lower the cost of homeownership and foster a new generation of property owners. We believe this is a fair and necessary move to support first time buyers. We urge the UK government to consider this proposal and take immediate steps towards its implementation.
