Abolish Premium on Council Tax for Second Homeowners

Abolish Premium on Council Tax for Second Homeowners
The Issue
As a homeowner struggling with health issues, I have firsthand experience of the immense pressure council tax puts on individuals - especially those who own a second home. I've been grappling with the steep council tax and additional premium on my secondary home, on top of managing health concerns. Monetary constraints have forced me to turn to my family for support, as my disability benefits prove insufficient to meet these escalating costs.
Much like me, numerous homeowners aim to rectify issues with their second properties while living in council or housing association homes. Yet these efforts are hindered by the pressing demand to pay the full council tax with an added premium on their own. The lack of understanding from the council is astounding, dismissing pleas for help, or offers to pay in reduced monthly installments. Instead, homeowners face penalties for non-payment, adding a further financial and mental burden.
This is not an isolated issue. According to The Guardian, in the UK, 2.6 million families are struggling to pay council taxes, leaving many in debt. A reconsideration of the council tax premium could bring about significant relief for individuals in such predicaments.
Ultimately, we urge the government to review and abolish the premium on council tax for second homeowners. This change would provide substantial relief for those juggling financial pressures, house maintenance, and personal health concerns. As citizens, we believe in a system that provides support rather than adding to our difficulties. Please sign this petition if you too believe in this cause and are eager to effect change.
