The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) exam, introduced as a uniform entrance examination for medical aspirants throughout India, poses significant challenges and stress on students and their families. This examination, while intended to streamline the entrance process, has instead created numerous obstacles that need immediate attention.

First and foremost, the NEET exam undermines the diverse educational frameworks across India's various states. Different states have distinct syllabi and educational methodologies, yet NEET insists on a central syllabus that often leaves students from certain boards at a disadvantage. For instance, students from state boards find themselves competing on unequal footing with those from central boards like CBSE, which the NEET syllabus predominantly aligns with.

Moreover, the pressure of performing well in NEET has spawned an entire industry of coaching institutes, turning education into a commercialized venture rather than a right. These coaching centers are often expensive, making it difficult for economically disadvantaged students to access the resources needed to compete effectively. Additionally, students experiencing this kind of stress at such a young age may face long-term negative impacts on their mental health.

The NEET exam has also been linked to several deeply troubling consequences, including a rise in student suicides, reflecting the intense burdens placed on these young individuals. A stark reminder is the 2017 incident in Tamil Nadu, where a student, unable to achieve her desired NEET score, took her own life.

Given these critical issues, it is imperative that the government reconsider the mandate of the NEET exam. By abolishing NEET, we can foster a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse educational environment where students across the nation can pursue their dreams without overwhelming hurdles. Instead, opportunities should be prioritized for states to conduct their own entrance exams or to explore other holistic assessment methods that accommodate regional educational differences and diverse student experiences.
