Hello all,
I received a call this morning from Tracy Hoss, the head of corporate responsibility at AbbVie. She confirmed that the FDA has approved the "citrate free" version of Humira. She states they have been working on this for some time and will be offering the original formulation for those who do not wish to switch, as well as the citrate free version. For some adults and children the formulation as it stands is not bothersome. For many who have found success with Humira, they do not wish to tempt fate with changing the medication. That is entirely valid and I completely respect and understand that perspective.
I am pleased as punch, however, to report that the citrate free version WILL be available in the U.S. in "the first half of 2018". That is a direct quote that I have been permitted to relay to all of you. I am excited that we will have the option available soon and I am thrilled we have a clear and dependable answer from their head of corporate responsibility.
I believe many I have spoken with felt frustrated because there has been a lack of understanding on the delay and in whose hands that responsibility lies. Medical providers, nurses, support forums all had different theories on where the breakdown was occurring. I hope that this brings you a glimmer of hope that we can make just one factor of our children's struggle easier.
I am only sorry that our kids did not have this option sooner. There are multiple complex reasons, I am sure, why the U.S. market took some time to get this ball rolling. I am just happy many of the higher ups at AbbVie received my emails, saw this petition, and hear our voices. Although they'd already been working on this for some time, communication about timeline is a win in my book.
Tracy was lovely to speak with and I am quite happy to know that within the next six or seven months, we will see a citrate free version. She states she can not give me an exact release date but could promise me that in the first half of 2018 it would be here. Tracy has stated she will be my main point of contact and is very available to speak.
I hope this helps bring you a little comfort today as it brought me a little comfort knowing that things will get better.
Big hugs to all of you,
Caity
