A vote of no confidence in the Danson family as owners of Wigan Athletic
A vote of no confidence in the Danson family as owners of Wigan Athletic
The Issue
Since Mike Danson’s takeover of Wigan Athletic in 2023, the club has been in what appears to be a constant downward spiral. Worsening league positions, significant budget cuts, long-serving staff losing their jobs, redundancies affecting supporters and the removal of the stadium as a club asset have all raised serious concerns about the direction in which our club is heading.
Wigan Athletic currently operates without a Chief Executive Officer. At a recent fans’ forum, Lucas Danson failed to provide a convincing explanation of the club’s future plans or ambitions, with the discussion seemingly focusing instead on supporters’ failure to purchase hospitality tickets. This is simply not good enough for a club with the history, identity and importance of Wigan Athletic.
The continued decline under the Danson family’s ownership threatens the long-term future of our club and causes deep anxiety among supporters. We are grateful that the Danson family intervened in 2023 to prevent Wigan Athletic from going into liquidation. However, that intervention cannot excuse what has happened since. Supporters have every right to question the apparent lack of ambition, direction and care being shown towards the football club and its fanbase.
Finding ourselves bottom of League One, with the prospect of further decline, is an unacceptable position for a club of our stature. We cannot stand by and watch Wigan Athletic drift further away from the levels of competitiveness and ambition that supporters expect.
We therefore call for a formal vote of no confidence in Mike Danson and the Danson family’s ownership and stewardship of Wigan Athletic.
We believe the current ownership has failed to provide the leadership, transparency and credible long-term vision necessary to give supporters confidence in the club’s future.
Our ultimate demand is clear: the Danson family must sell Wigan Athletic and the stadium to a suitable new owner who has genuine ambition, a commitment to the football club and a desire to see Wigan Athletic succeed once again.
This is about more than league positions or individual results. It is about protecting the future of our club, preserving its identity and ensuring that the interests of Wigan Athletic and its supporters come first.
We recognise the role the Danson family played in saving the club in 2023, but gratitude for the past cannot come at the expense of our future.
Wigan Athletic is our club, our community and our identity. We deserve leadership, ambition and a future we can believe in. None of that has even been evident from any member of the current ownership
It is time for supporters to stand together, make their voices heard and demand change.
No more decline. The future of Wigan Athletic must come first. Sell the club, sell the Stadium, and allow us to have some hope again.
We, the undersigned supporters of Wigan Athletic, declare a vote of no confidence in Mike Danson and the Danson family.
