Hi folks,
Over 4 years ago you were one of nearly 3000 people calling for a traffic-free riverside park and town square for Twickenham, a “Space for People; Not Cars”. You asked for a cafe, a restaurant, a playground, boathouses and community space, with some but limited retail and residential development.
We suggested an open competition, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects, to appoint architects and come up with a great scheme.
Well, good news at last! We’re nearly there! We, TRPT, have been working diligently behind the scenes to make sure that the Council delivered on its promise.
The RIBA competition selected Hopkins Associates and their detailed design has been submitted for planning approval. The planning application is being consulted on now and can be seen at:
LBRuT's Planning Application for Twickenham Riverside
There’s a lot to take in and we commend the architects and council officers who have gone into such detail to explain their proposals.
We welcome the planning application and hope that you will do so too.
Our principle demands have been met - delivering a massive shift away from car parking to a place for people. Attractive open spaces suitable for a range of activities; from concerts, play, markets and places to just gather, sit and relax and socialise. A 50/50 mix of affordable and private housing and a range of flexible office, retail and hospitality spaces anchor the proposals and will bring life back to a neglected and underused site.
We are confident that the plans for providing controlled access and additional designated parking in surrounding areas will protect the interests of Eel Pie Island while delivering a massive gain for the people and businesses of wider Twickenham.
If you like the plans please express your approval. Let’s not lose this opportunity now. Your Comments in Support can be posted at the link above, preferably by 27th September, but they will be accepted after that. Please pass this information on to friends and neighbours and ask them to express their support too.
We all look forward to the delivery of a vibrant “New Heart for Twickenham” regenerating our town in changing times. Thank you.
The Twickenham Riverside Park Team
