Every child deserves love, safety, and a nurturing environment where they can grow and thrive. Unfortunately, countless children around the world, and even in our own communities, still face abuse, neglect, and unsafe living conditions. Many of them live in homes where their basic needs are ignored, their voices are silenced, and their potential is threatened. The effects of these experiences can last a lifetime, impacting their emotional, social, and mental well-being. It is our responsibility as a society to ensure that every child is given the care, protection, and opportunities.

In the Philippines, many children continue to face unsafe and harmful environments. Based on findings from UNICEF, over half of Filipino children experience violent discipline at home, including physical aggression, punishment, and psychological aggression. In 2022, nearly 60 percent of children aged 1–14 experienced at least one form of violent discipline, with more than 11 million children reporting physical aggression and over 9 million subjected to physical punishment. Nearly 800,000 children suffered severe physical punishment. These numbers reveal the widespread prevalence of violence, showing that despite protective laws, many children remain at risk and urgently need stronger safeguards to ensure their safety and well-being (Commission on Human Rights, 2024). Beyond discipline, national child protection assessments show that nearly one in five adolescents has been a victim of child sexual abuse and about 20 percent of internet-using children have faced online sexual exploitation (Safeguarding Childhood, n.d.). Furthermore, an estimated 5.14 million Filipino children, or roughly 12.4 percent, live in extreme poverty, which increases their risk of malnutrition, school dropout, and child labor, especially in rural areas (World Vision, n.d.).

 

While these numbers illustrate the scale of the problem, they only hint at the deeper, long-term impact on children’s lives. Exposure to violent discipline and unsafe environments can disrupt emotional stability, social relationships, and learning abilities. To fully understand the urgency of child protection, it is important to explore the lasting effects these experiences have on children’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

 

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), children who experience abuse, neglect, or unsafe environments may face long-term challenges that affect their emotional, social, and cognitive growth. These effects include:

• Difficulty managing emotions, including anxiety, fear, depression, or explosive reactions.
• Struggles with relationships and trusting others, especially if early caregivers were unreliable or harmful.
• Interference with learning, attention, and cognitive development, making school and social growth harder.
• Fight-or-flight behavior, emotional numbing, or dissociation, affecting daily functioning and interaction.
• Chronic stress leading to long-term physical and mental health issues.

 

In addition, psychologists have long emphasized the importance of early experiences. Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual theory highlights that disruptions in early developmental stages, such as trust and security during the oral and anal stages, can influence personality and emotional health later in life. Similarly, Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory stresses that children must successfully navigate key developmental stages (such as trust vs. mistrust and autonomy vs. shame) to grow into well-adjusted individuals. When these stages are disrupted by violence or neglect, children may struggle with confidence, social relationships, and emotional regulation throughout their lives.

 

It is time to take action. Every child deserves to grow up safe, loved, and protected. No child should live in fear or suffer from violence and neglect. We urge the government, communities, and families to strengthen child protection measures, enforce existing laws, and provide accessible support for every child at risk.
