A petition from Senator Rick Scott's former staffer: Reform Florida’s Mental Health System

The Issue

First and foremost, I must thank God. I would not be writing this today without His mercy. He has given me the strength to address this atrocious issue in the state of Florida. An issue that I pray nobody else has to face, yet the unfortunate reality is that thousands do. I experienced it and witnessed the downfall of others firsthand.

If the conversation I’ve started does not give you warm and fuzzy feelings, join the club. This is the last thing I want to be doing, but it needs to be done anyway. The dismissive approach toward the mentally ill in the state of Florida must come to end. I refuse to stand idly by and watch doctors use chemical substances and fly-by-night diagnoses to poison the public after a 10 minute consultation. Many of the symptoms that patients show up with to an initial intake visit could easily be solved by lifestyle changes like exercise, diet, talk therapy, and other stress outlets.

The system that is in place promotes the use of mind altering medications that will leave you a shell of your former self. If anybody knows, it’s me. Trust me when I say that when you get sucked into this sphere of influence, nobody is coming to save you. You will be required to save yourself. A feat proven extremely difficult when under the influence of medications that inhibit basic human function.

I suffered greatly under the “care” of psychiatrists in Tallahassee, FL beginning in 2019 which gave me the unfortunate opportunity to delve deep into the dark world of Florida’s mental health systems over the last 5 years.

For those that know me and distanced themselves from me as a result, this part is for you. I see you. I remember you. Your rejection is burned deep into my mind, regardless of the number of mind numbing substances I was forced to take. Let it continue to be used as inspiration to make changes in an extremely broken system.

If this message is something you can get behind, I’d be glad to have your support. For those that still live in the headspace that this is too weird or awkward to address, remember that feeling when your iPad kid starts going berserk. I have been stonewalled by attorneys in the Tallahassee area and the Senator's office as well, who if I were to guess are intimidated by the scale of impact this may have. All the more reason to fight on.

Sidebar for the doubters and naysayers. This is not some gotcha, sneak attack, cash grab, or act of revenge. This is an opportunity to take an extremely tragic situation and channel it into positive changes for the betterment of society in the state of Florida and the rest of the United States.

I am calling for legislators, advocates, doctors, therapists, and everyone else for that matter, from the top to the bottom to come to the table and enforce real active change to this broken system that has failed so many. This call goes beyond the monied corporations that have bought and paid for the silence of so many for so long. Know this: your green pieces of paper are no good here. To the PR teams that are most likely in the process of digging up junk on me to smear my credibility, search away. There's plenty to find.

With love always.

Signed,

A man not finished.
