A new skatepark to replace the one in wigmore valley park
The Issue
As a skater that lives in Luton, I am making this petition to raise awareness about the urgent need for a new skatepark to be built in Luton. Currently skaters like myself often travel 30 minutes or more to find a decent park or spot where we can get a good session. This reduces our ability to frequently skate and improve.
There have been plans in place since 2017 that were drawn up by maverick industries. The council have said it is a matter of funding, let’s show them that there are people in the community who will help raise the money , awareness about the cause and also use the new park if it was built.
Luton is home to a dedicated skate scene who deserve a safe and well designed skate park in our town. By making a new park we will be giving the community in Luton and the surrounding areas a chance to grow and thrive. It will not only increase participation in recreational activities but also improve the mental well-being of people involved.
The following are some reasons to support this petition and prove to the council that there is a community who need this new park:
Growing participation: the skateboarding community in the uk has significantly grown in recent years, and is a sport that welcomes all ages with endless possibilities to do.
Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport: skateboarding was introduced to the last summer Olympic Games and is an official sporting event. British skateboarder Sky Brown won a bronze medal in the park competition in 2021.
Positive impact on mental health: skateboarding is more than just a physical activity, it is an outlet for stress, self-expression and creativity while promoting mental wellbeing.
Local economic benefits: a new skatepark would draw people into Luton to use the skatepark and would then boost local businesses such as shops and cafes near the park.
Crime reduction: providing a positive outlet to young people like skating can help reduce anti social behaviour or criminal activities.
