Not only will a new store provide an alternative to your current grocery shopping experience, including lower prices, it will also help offset future tax increases.

A recent analysis by Placer.ai found that there is an estimated retail leakage of $3.4 million in Bay Springs and Jasper County since the 2023 closing of the Corner Market. ("retail leakage" means the estimated amount of money now being spent out of town for groceries in just 6 months.)

Tax Revenue for Bay Springs

The analysis also showed a $24 million grocery demand in Bay Springs and Jasper County in 2023. Since the closing of the Corner Market, research showed an $11 million deficit in grocery inventory for the area.  When recouped, this lost revenue could be used for infrastructure, other community-wide needs and to support our schools.

This would also deter future tax increases for the town. The new store would be an important anchor in attracting other desirable businesses such as a variety of shops and restaurants, which would increase dining and shopping options in our business district and surrounding areas.

New Developer, New Project

While the potential grocer wants to keep the name of the store anonymous for now, it will not be an Aldi, DG Market, Kroger, or Walmart. The new grocery store will be similar in size to other area stores and designed to adhere to the aesthetics of our community. It is also anticipated to create numerous full or part-time jobs.

The new jobs will include opportunities for teenagers and young adults to work in a great environment at a trusted brand. The grocer is known for excellent community support, including programs in local schools.

Traffic and Wastewater Plans

The proposed development will include all necessary infrastructure improvements to mitigate any potential traffic or environmental  impacts.
