A "Just Justice" for Bernard Placide, Jr.

A "Just Justice" for Bernard Placide, Jr.

The Issue

Our police are here to protect and serve. We value these services, but the services mean very little without the proper procedures in place to shield the people they are sworn to protect in a time of crisis from judgement errors or just bad cops. We need to strengthen policies and laws to protect our communities, our children, and our vulnerable people from future harm and additional harm. We need to provide a “Just Justice” for all through better policing management and legal processes.

Bernard Placide Jr. was shot and killed by the Englewood, NJ police when his mother called them to help her son suffering a mental health crisis. The officers arrived and killed her son in the process. You can witness in the officer’s video that Bernard was subdued by a taser to the floor when another officer climbed on top of his body while Bernard was being tased and officer Luana Sharpe's gun went off killing Bernard Placide Jr.

The officer that killed Bernard Placide Jr. was promoted months later. This is horrible and it exacerbates the wrongdoing or mistake of law enforcement. This takes a tragic incident and makes it horribly worse for all of those impacted by the loss of a loved one due to the negligence.

Englewood, NJ police department is currently under scrutiny and has pending law suits for racial discrimination on top of this tragedy. We need to enforce better training and practices through strengthened laws and policies that will allow for outside governance of police departments quickly and more efficiently when the people of the community are harmed by the police. We need a justice that will be equal for all regardless of who they are and where they come from in the world.

A “Just Justice” will help smash out harm to the community through improvement in laws, policies, training, and responsible action.
