This is a serious problem and it is getting worse day by day. 98.8% of parents said action needs to be taken to make school drop of safer for our kids at Golborne Primary. So here is my attempt at action, but we need you.

The school gates should be a place of positivity, safety and minimal risk. Yet our kids are put at risk twice a day. The only people that can effect change is the local council. We need to take action to raise their awareness and accountability, so they take immediate action. Rather than present themselves as the solution post incident (hopefully not) and deny all knowledge of it even being a problem.

We, the parents, carers, residents, and members of the Golborne community, urgently call on Wigan Council to take immediate action to protect the children outside Golborne Community Primary School (and others if applicable)

Every single day, especially in cold and wet weather (when risk is highest), cars and vans are parking illegally on the yellow zig-zags directly outside the school. These markings are there for one reason — to STOP children being hidden from drivers and to prevent a tragedy as risk to children is at its highest.

Yet they are ignored daily, remarkably by parents.

Children step out from behind illegally parked vehicles and cannot be seen.
Drivers pull in and out of the zig-zag area with no visibility.
Parents rush, block sightlines, and create blind corners and real risk.

This is not a rare occurrence.
This is every morning, every afternoon and its getting worse as no action is being taken to correct this by the council. The headteacher has tried his best, parents have entered hostile conversations to encourage the parents not to park there. Yet this continues.

And if this continues, many of us firmly believe that within the next 12 months a child will be seriously injured or killed. Infact I would go as far to say it is guaranteed to happen as more parents chose to run the risk.

This is not scaremongering.
It is the reality we see with our own eyes, twice a day, five days a week and its starting to causse conflict between parents.

We are not asking for the world.
We are asking for the single most proven, effective, and realistic solution available:

Install School Safety Enforcement Cameras on the Zig-Zags
These cameras:

automatically issue fines to any vehicle stopping on the zig-zag area
instantly deter dangerous parking
are used successfully across the UK
are affordable, practical, and enforceable
protect children without restricting residents
require no major roadworks or physical infrastructure
One camera can save lives. 
One camera can change behaviour instantly.
One camera can fix a problem that has been left unchecked for far too long, despite the Headteachers relentless attempts.

This is the only measure we truly need.
And the one the council can implement the quickest.

In a time when politicians say they care about families, communities, and safeguarding children, there has never been a more obvious, visible, and urgent opportunity to demonstrate it.

Children have never needed protection more than they do today.
And nowhere should be safer than the school gates.

Installing enforcement cameras would show that:

the council cares about children’s safety
the council listens to the community
the council acts before tragedy strikes
the well-being of families matters more than convenience or excuses
safeguarding is not just a slogan — it’s a priority
This is a chance for our local representatives to do something that will make a real, measurable, and life-saving difference.

 
This Is Not About Blame — It’s About Responsibility
Nobody wants to point fingers.
Nobody wants to shame parents.
We all understand that mornings are stressful, and life is busy.

But none of that justifies putting a child’s life at risk.

We must create an environment where doing the wrong thing is simply not an option — and enforcement cameras are the only way to guarantee that.

✔️ Immediate prioritisation by Wigan Council & a written reply of accountability.
✔️ Visible action before a preventable tragedy occurs

Children deserve to arrive at school safely.
They deserve to walk through the gates without risk.
And families deserve to know that their community leaders are protecting them.

We ask Wigan Council to act now — not after the worst happens.
