A CALZOA es una playa ÚNICA Y SINGULAR en el municipio de Vigo (Pontevedra) al formar parte del humedal del río Lagares, junto a la MARISMA de A Xunqueira) y el ESTUARIO de A Foz. sobresaliente por sus elevados índices de BIODIVERSIDAD, superando con creces a cualquier otra playa del litoral vigués.Destaca la NUMEROSA COMUNIDAD DE AVES, principalmente acuáticas y marinas, que utilizan este espacio para alimentarse y como refugio, encontrándose muchas de ellas catalogadas tanto en la Directiva Aves 2009/147/EC como en la directiva de protección de los Hábitats 92/43/EC.
Es un espacio vital también para las NUTRIAS, especie de Interés Comunitario que requiere protección estricta, y que utilizan esta playa como zona de alimentación y en sus desplazamientos entre el río y el mar.
Además, A CALZOA cuenta con una DUNA MÓVIL DEL LITORAL con Ammophila arenaria (DUNA BLANCA), un valioso hábitat prioritario que se encuentra AMENAZADO DE DESAPARICIÓN y catalogado también en la Directiva Hábitats.Precisamente, A CALZOA es la playa seleccionada por el ayuntamiento de Vigo, entre sus más de 40 playas, para ser designada como espacio de esparcimiento canino.
Numerosos estudios científicos evidencian el elevado impacto que la presencia de perros sueltos causa sobre la fauna litoral, principalmente a las aves.

No se trata de demonizar a ningún animal, sino de ENTENDER LA INTERACCIÓN que se produce entre ellos. Cuando permitimos que un perro persiga a las aves, aunque no las atrape, causamos en ellas un importante ESTRÉS, les impedimos o dificultamos la obtención de ALIMENTO, las privamos de DESCANSO y las obligamos a invertir un elevado gasto energético en tener que HUIR CONSTANTEMENTE. Esto, cuando se produce de forma intensa o prolongada en el tiempo, dificulta enormemente su supervivencia y lleva a su inexorable desaparición.
Desde el primer momento de ser declarada canina, en junio de 2018, LOS ÍNDICES DE BIODIVERSIDAD EN A CALZOA HAN SUFRIDO UN DECLIVE DRÁSTICO Y SE HA AFECTADO GRAVEMENTE AL ECOSISTEMA. Esta pérdida de biodiversidad local ha repercutido en la tasa de biodiversidad global de todo el litoral vigués. AL PERDER A CALZOA, ESTAS ESPECIES NO ENCUENTRAN UN LUGAR ADECUADO EN TODO ESTE TRAMO COSTERO. ÉSTE ERA EL ÚNICO.
Más de 50 ASOCIACIONES DE ESTUDIO Y DEFENSA DE LA NATURALEZA Y 15 MIEMBROS DE LA COMUNIDAD CIENTÍFICA han firmado un manifiesto en defensa de A CALZOA instando a las autoridades a tomar MEDIDAS INMEDIATAS para revertir esta injustificable situación y solicitan una GESTIÓN RESPONSABLE y real de los espacios naturales exigiendo que se respeten las normas establecidas para preservarlos.
Es necesario promover la tenencia responsable y la concienciación ambiental, para lo cual se requiere colaboración, tanto de autoridades como de la sociedad en general, que deben trabajar juntas para crear entornos donde tanto las personas como los animales puedan disfrutar de sus espacios de manera respetuosa.

A CALZOA is a UNIQUE AND SINGULAR beach in the municipality of Vigo (Pontevedra) as it forms part of the Lagares River wetland, alongside the A Xunqueira MARSH and the A Foz ESTUARY. This area stands out due to its exceptionally high levels of BIODIVERSITY, far surpassing any other beach along the Vigo coastline.
Notably, there is a NUMEROUS COMMUNITY OF BIRDS, primarily aquatic and marine species, that use this area for feeding and as a refuge. Many of these species are listed under both the Directives 2009/147/EC and 92/43/EC.
Additionally, this space is vital for OTTERS, a species of Community Interest that requires strict protection, which use this beach as a feeding area and as a corridor between the river and the sea.
Moreover, A CALZOA has a MOBILE COASTAL DUNE with Ammophila arenaria (WHITE DUNE), a valuable priority habitat that is THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION and is also listed under the Habitats Directive.
A CALZOA has been selected by the Vigo City Council from among its more than 40 beaches to be designated as a dog recreation area. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the significant impact that the presence of unleashed dogs has on coastal wildlife, particularly on birds.
This is not about demonizing any animal, but about UNDERSTANDING THE INTERACTION that occurs between them. When we allow a dog to chase birds, even if it does not catch them, we cause them significant STRESS, hinder their capacity to get FOOD, deprive them of REST, and force them to expend a high amount of energy fleeing CONSTANTLY. When this occurs intensely or over prolonged periods, it greatly impairs their survival and leads to their inevitable disappearance.
From the moment it was declared a pet beach in June 2018, BIODIVERSITY LEVELS AT A CALZOA HAVE SUFFERED A DRASTIC DECLINE, AND THE ECOSYSTEM HAS BEEN SEVERELY IMPACTED. This loss of local biodiversity has affected the overall biodiversity rate along the entire Vigo coastline. BY LOSING A CALZOA, THESE SPECIES CANNOT FIND A SUITABLE PLACE IN THIS ENTIRE COASTAL SECTION. A CALZOA WAS THE ONLY ONE.
More than 50 NATURE STUDY AND CONSERVATION ASSOCIATIONS and 15 MEMBERS OF THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY have signed a manifesto in defense of A CALZOA, urging the authorities to take IMMEDIATE ACTION to reverse this unjustifiable situation and are calling for RESPONSIBLE AND REAL MANAGEMENT of natural spaces, demanding that established regulations for their preservation be respected.
It is essential to promote responsible pet ownership and environmental awareness, which requires collaboration from both authorities and society in general. Together, they must work to create environments where both people and animals can enjoy their spaces in a respectful way.
