A BETTER OPTION FOR UKRAINE AND EUROPE - Sign a Better Minerals Deal with Europe too

El problema

As a concerned European citizen who has personally witnessed the impact of the war by visiting a friend in Wroclaw—a Polish city where Ukrainian refugees have nearly doubled the local population—I urge decision-makers to urgently explore more cooperative approaches to harness Ukraine’s untapped resources.

Ukraine is endowed with vast mineral deposits, including highly coveted rare earth elements that, due to historic circumstances, remain underexploited. These resources, valued at trillions of dollars, should be developed under a transparent and mutually beneficial agreement—one that includes not just the United States but Europe as well. Such an arrangement would reduce the risk of one-sided exploitation while still creating ample opportunities for all partners.

The Financing Model:

Rather than depending on grants or one-time aid packages, Ukraine could use its mineral wealth as collateral to secure loans at interest rates that reflect its current risk profile. Proceeds from these minerals would then be used to repay those loans. This model would allow Ukraine to:

1) Acquire the defense equipment it urgently needs to be in a better position for a long lasting peace deal.
2) Strengthen its economy by leveraging its own resources,
3) Avoid excessive reliance on a single foreign donor—especially when trust is in short supply.

Benefits for Europe:

Europe, currently confronting economic challenges mainly due to the high energy prices caused by the war, would benefit immensely by actively participating in this deal and the development of Ukraine’s mineral sector. This cooperation could revitalize industries such as mining and defense manufacturing, providing jobs and driving investment across the continent—as previously suggested by key policy reports (like the one presented by Mario Draghi last year). By having a direct stake in Ukraine’s resource development, European nations could also foster transparency and fairness in extraction and trade.

A Great Opportunity for the United States:

The United States would remain a vital partner. Since the Trump administration leans toward a business-focused approach, treating Ukraine as a paying client (instead of merely an aid recipient) ensures a mutually benefitial relationship for both sides. This arrangement would guarantee that Ukraine obtains all its needed defense support and more while American investors and industries see significant returns—without resorting to predatory terms. Moreover, not only with the interests of the loans, the U.S. defense sector would profit substantially from such a huge customer.

Why It Matters:

1) Empowering Ukraine: By bolstering Ukraine’s economy and defense capabilities, it can negotiate any future peace agreement from a position of greater strength—without resorting to unfair or humiliating terms from adversaries that have shown in multiple occasions that it cannot be trusted without assurances.

2) Protecting European Interests: Involving Europe from the outset lessens the risk of one-sided deals and fosters shared economic growth, rather than allowing a single partner to dominate.

3) Fostering Transatlantic Cooperation: A tripartite arrangement (Ukraine–EU–USA) balances interests and can avert conflicts over resources or debt down the line ensuring the relationship is benefitial for all parties involved.
