A Better Future: Reduce Clothing Waste for the Next Generation

A Better Future: Reduce Clothing Waste for the Next Generation
The issue
I want to stop 200,000 tonnes of clothing from going to landfill every year in Australia.
Every single year, mountains of clothing are thrown away. Perfectly good garments — shirts, jeans, jackets, dresses — all ending up buried in the ground. This adds up to more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing waste annually in Australia alone. That’s the equivalent of billions of litres of water, huge amounts of energy, and precious resources wasted.
But this isn’t just about numbers. This is about the way we live, the way we consume, and the legacy we leave behind. Right now, fashion is one of the world’s most polluting industries, yet each of us has the power to change the story — simply by sharing, reusing, and recycling the clothes we already have.
I want to build a future where clothing doesn’t equal waste. Where what we no longer wear doesn’t get tossed aside, but passed on. Where a dress that no longer fits you could become someone else’s favourite outfit. Where swapping, donating, and recycling clothes is second nature, not a second thought.
This petition is about more than raising awareness — it’s about sparking a movement. By signing, you are saying: I believe in a circular fashion economy, I believe we can do better, and I want to take action now.
Here’s what we need to do together:
• Encourage sharing and swapping: Make it easy for communities, schools, and workplaces to set up clothing swap events.
• Support reuse and donations: Redirect clothes to charities, shelters, and second-hand shops instead of landfill.
• Promote recycling initiatives: Push for wider access to textile recycling bins and programs so nothing is wasted.
• Shift our culture: Move away from “fast fashion throwaway” habits to valuing what we already have.
Every item of clothing we reuse makes a difference. Reusing just one T-shirt saves the same amount of water you’d drink in three years. Extending the life of clothing by just nine months reduces its environmental footprint by up to 30 percent. These small actions, multiplied by millions of people, will transform the system.
I am asking you to join me. Sign this petition, share it with your networks, and commit to one action today: swap, donate, or recycle something from your wardrobe. Together, we can keep clothing out of landfill, cut waste, and create a fashion system that works for people and for the planet.
This is not about sacrifice, it’s about opportunity. It’s about building stronger communities, saving money, and protecting our environment at the same time. Imagine if every person in Australia shared just one piece of clothing instead of throwing it away — the impact would be enormous.
We can’t afford to ignore this problem. But the good news is, the solution is already in our hands — literally, in the clothes hanging in our wardrobes.
