A Bedtime Story for the Modern Age: A Petition to Disney

The issue

Dear Disney,

Remember those cherished moments from childhood? The ones where we’d curl up with a book, getting lost in the worlds of our favorite characters before drifting off to sleep. For many of us, that feeling was beautifully captured and updated for a new generation by the Disney Story Central app. It wasn't just a collection of stories; it was a magical portal to a peaceful night's rest.

But then, as Disney shifted its focus to streaming services like Disney+, we lost that wonderful app.

And here's the thing: Disney+ is fantastic for entertainment, but it's not designed for the quiet moments before sleep. The flashing lights and moving images are meant to keep you engaged and awake, not to help you unwind. When sleep is hard to find, or when you wake up in the middle of the night, what we really need is the gentle, steady rhythm of a story to help us find our way back to rest.

While there are other reading apps out there, they just don't have the same magic. For so many of us, it was the unique, comforting look of the Disney characters and illustrations that made Story Central so special. It was a familiar, beautiful world that felt like coming home.

That's why we're asking for the return of Disney Story Central and the magic it brought to our nights.

We're not just asking for the old app back, but an improved one for the future. We've put together some ideas to show what a new, improved Disney Story Central could look like. You can view our vision here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1repJLkIdjJclaVB9zeQTePqkZw3hFAfL/view?usp=drivesdk

Imagine a new app that combines the best of the old with new, modern features:

The beloved "read-along" technology to help children learn to read, with words highlighting as they are narrated.
A personalized and customizable experience, where children can have their own bookshelves and character avatars that track their progress.
A rewards system with stars, trophies, and badges to encourage a lifelong love of reading.
A vast and ever-growing library of stories with new stories added weekly and an easy "Browse by Character" feature.
A dedicated sleep timer, so the stories can gently fade out as we drift off.
And, most importantly, a promise that this app will be a permanent, reliable feature for families everywhere.
Please, Disney, bring back the comfort of a good night's rest, filled with the enchanting worlds of your stories. Give us a place to wind down and escape into a book, guided by the characters we’ve loved our entire lives.

Let's not let the story end here.

In other words:

Now I may have already sent something like another Facebook message I sent earlier, but I just want to send it again so I can be more clear with it. So, remember Disney Story Central? The app that lets people read-along to stories, browse stories by their favourite characters, earn tokens and rewards for good reading, setting up bookshelves, and other nostalgic things about the app? I know we can buy some books on Apple Books, but it doesn’t have many from this app and children might also want to have more content from their favourite characters as they’re not being released on Disney+. I want the app back because it looks a lot better, the characters look nice, I can probably read before I go to bed and maybe get sleepy, and best of all, I can see more of my favourite Disney characters every week. And by that, I mean old and UNSEEN Cars moments! And I think others do to. If we can’t have Cars 4, another season of Cars on the Road, or even the other characters from Cars 2 return, more of the cancelled stuff like Planes, Little Einsteins and Special Agent Oso, the third-party stuff released internationally, and many, many more, we can have books every single week instead! I’m eternally passionate about the looks of the characters (the ones that looks like the picture I sent specifically (That should be the picture of all books. Not just the idiotic cartoony look that doesn’t look anything like the shows)), the character finding, pretty much all Disney characters on here as they said “your favourite Disney characters/their favourite characters”, the browse by character scroll, the read-along stuff, and possibly others. I also wanna add a sleep timer on there so when you’re reading and you’re getting sleepy. The story will stop and you’ll go to sleep. Another thing I’d like to add is something similar to Disney+ where you can also choose from seen Disney videos, but in books. (e.g., the story of films and TV series’ by pressing a down arrow for seasons and the books telling their stories are in order of every episode number. If kids don’t really feel comfortable with watching the shows possibly now that they’re older, (and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse gave me anxiety attacks as well, and Inside Out 2 was a bit ruined for me because of Bloofy and “Oh Pouchy!”) they can just read books with the episode names instead. They could also do that if they’ve had enough time watching TV or videos and they can read instead. I know that technology isn’t good for all children. But if they’re reading, it shouldn’t affect them. Also, I’m starting to get a bit of opinion on Marvel movies, and if children want to drift off to that, they can. I mean, Transformers has stories on Calm, so so should Marvel. All stories are good for bed, maybe even if seen on technology. And it should stay like that forever. Children like Disney, grown-ups like Disney. Maybe Disney Story Central could be for adults too. Just create accounts like Netflix or Disney Plus and set it to made for kids. So that Disney Story Central will only show the books made for kids. And for all ages, well, grown-ups can read stories based on Family Guy, Deadpool, Futurama, Deadpool & Wolverine, etc.. and they can still have a sleep timer, read-along, stuff like that. But they can also read kids stuff, especially the autistic adults like me. And most important of all, it needs to be permanent so children can “read Disney+ instead of watch it when needing to”. So consider signing my petition to save Disney Story Central, kids’ sleep (including mine as I want to read to fall asleep so I don’t always have bad nights), kids and adults’ favourite characters from being cancelled altogether and also, kids and maybe adults’ brains! Watching videos and playing games isn’t good for you, but reading is. Sign up for Disney Story Central now and consider getting your nostalgia back! The children are counting on you!

Note that we’re getting stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Star, Hulu, ESPN, and more.
