Justice for Tango: Demand Strict Regulation for Pet Boarding in Sri Lanka

Tango was not just a dog. He was a beloved American Bully, a family member, whose life was brutally and preventably taken at Pawtopia Boarding in Negombo, Sri Lanka.

His owner, Chathura, works overseas and trusted Pawtopia   a facility that promised safety and expert care  to look after Tango while he was away. That trust was broken in the most devastating way.

The facility's owner, Chaturanga, was completely ill-equipped to manage and board powerful breeds. When a small pet entered the area, it led to chaos and an outbreak of violence that put Tango at risk.

What happened next is unthinkable. Instead of safely separating and securing the dogs with professional handling, a worker at the Pawtopia boarding center brutally attacked Tango, hitting him with a shovel 62 times. This was not control, this was extreme cruelty and negligence.

After this brutal attack, Tango was left critically injured, bleeding from all over his body and fighting for his life. He was then taken to a veterinary clinic in Kochchikade, Negombo.

What happened at the clinic raises even more painful questions. Despite arriving in a critical condition   bleeding everywhere and severely traumatized from the shovel attack — a female veterinarian at that clinic performed a neuter surgery on Tango. We cannot understand why a neuter procedure was performed on a dog who was in such a critical, unstable state and needed emergency trauma care. It is a decision that any pet owner would question, and it demands a full explanation.

Tango suffered for eight agonizing days after the attack and the surgery, before he finally passed away.

This was not just an accident. This was a chain of negligence, from an untrained boarding facility to a questionable veterinary decision, that cost an innocent soul his life.

The pain of losing Tango is immeasurable, but even more heartbreaking is knowing this tragedy was entirely preventable.

We are standing together to demand justice for Tango and to ensure no other pet suffers the same fate.

We call for:

1. Immediate investigation and accountability for Pawtopia Boarding and for the veterinary treatment provided in Kochchikade.

2. Mandatory, strict regulations and oversight for all pet boarding facilities across Sri Lanka.

3. Mandatory training and certification for all facility operators in animal behavior, safety, and the special handling of powerful breeds.

4. Regular government inspections and stringent penalties for non-compliance.

Pet owners must be able to trust that a boarding facility will keep their companions safe. Tango trusted humans to protect him, and we failed him.

Please sign and share this petition to demand justice for Tango and to create a safer future for all beloved pets in Sri Lanka.
