Reform Rehab Laws for Addicts
The Issue
For anyone that has dealt with a drug addict, especially a family member, can resonate with this statement all too well. Having a loved one go through the hell of addiction is something you can’t begin to understand unless you’ve actually been in those shoes. However, the sad truth of the matter is, too many people are walking in these shoes.
Families are dealing with addicted loved ones all over the country. However you never see the tragedy the family goes through, you only hear about the downfall of the addict. The addict doesn’t just bring themselves down, they bring everyone that they love down as well... Even if it isn't intentional. Families must deal with consequences of the addict's actions, including bankruptcy, arson, hit and run, and even murder.
An addict's actions impact everyone around them. Families can only help their loved ones so much before the law gets in their way. There is nothing more devastating than knowing you have exceeded all your options to save your loved one(s) and you have no option but to watch them self-destruct and ultimately die…
In today’s day & age, the laws around treating addicts need to be updated. It can take weeks, months, or even years to get someone to go to rehab. After an addict has experienced countless amounts of accidents, public intoxication, police calls, ambulance calls, 302’s, and arrests due to drug intoxication, why should the struggling addict have the ability to sign themselves out of rehab? It is a completely counterproductive law that needs to be updated to match the ever growing epidemic of addicts. Severe addicts literally have altered minds and as a result should not be able to sign themselves out of rehab IF they meet a certain criteria. Basically after so many “strikes”, the addict should not have the right to be signed out of rehab. The right to check themselves out of rehab should be limited based on their history of drug abuse. Meeting this criteria, e.g. multiple arrests for public intoxication, should be punishable by losing their rights to refuse treatment at a rehab facility. This further increases the chances that they can get the help they truly need without unconscious self sabotage.
Addicts have families. Please help the families help the addict. Help the ones we love.
