The Issue

Proposed 320 MW AI data center (on ~25 acres at 3480 Ninth Line) promises jobs and investment, but it raises numerous community concerns. Key issues include its huge energy draw and climate footprint (Ontario demand is already strained by data centers), health and safety impacts from fuel, emissions and chemicals, continuous industrial noise, additional traffic and local infrastructure burden, massive water needs, land‐use conflicts (including a heritage farmhouse on-site), and the need for detailed emergency planning.

A 320 MW AI “Gigafactory” would demand roughly 2.8 TWh of electricity per year (320 MW×8760 h). This is comparable to the annual use of ~~300,000 Ontario households (assuming ~9,000 kWh/yr each) or a small city.

It far exceeds the consumption of Oakville’s ~234,000 residents (~2.2 TWh/yr). By 2035, Ontario expects data centers to represent ~13% of new demand. Even on a clean grid, this concentrated load strains generation and transmission. If conventional cooling were used, the site could withdraw up to ~5.3 billion litres of water per year (WUE≈1.9 L/kWh), roughly the yearly supply for ~22,000 homes.

The facility will occupy 10.1 hectares (25 acres) – about 15 soccer fields – farmland/heritage landscape.

Paved surfaces will increase stormwater runoff (≈2.5 million L per 25 mm rain).

Backup generators (hundreds of MW diesel) would burn ~34,600 L/hour (≈830,000 L/day at 320 MW) with ~2.7 kg CO₂ per L, so a 24-hour outage on diesel would emit ~2,200 tones CO₂ (plus local NOₓ/PM).

The community wants assurance that Oakville Fire Services has the equipment, training, and emergency plans needed.
