After SDHS sent a legal demand letter to HSSA for verifiable proof of the pets well being last week; a response letter from a Tucson law firm representing HSSA indicated the missing animals were sent to a Farming Community.

We the petitioners demand Proof of Life
Under the authority of CEO Steve Farley, the small prey animals were immediately transferred by Christian Gonzalez – a man who runs an python breeding business while working as the CPO of HSSAS; a situation that is a concerning conflict of interest.

The animals were then entrusted to a “private rescue” who in turn – according to the response letter- adopted them out in a farming community.

Although SDHS spays and neuters rabbits before adoption, according to their website, guinea pigs, rats and hamsters are not altered.

It is highly concerning the unaltered small pets may be used in breeding for unethical practices; it is also a concern that the domestic rabbits may have been used as predator food, human food, fur, research or dumped.

We have seen no credible evidence of death threats, only people committed to finding out the well being/proof of life of the animals. There is no logical reason for CEO Steve Farley to withhold the truth unless there is wrong doing; SDHS can easily be given proof of life without publicly naming private parties. The shelter staff can make confidential house calls or videos can be taken of the animals identifying them to the shelter with redaction of owners or addresses.

Due to the incredibly unethical, unprofessional behavior of Farley only the worst can only be assumed for the animals that were entrusted in his care.

HSSA stated they expect this to be the last time HSSA hears from SDHS regarding this matter however; according to the news interview SDHS is not willing to let this drop, they want full accountability of the 250 animals.

A formal investigation by the Mayor, City Manager and City Councilman  is in order.
