21st Century Declaration of Independence
The Issue
As wise people long ago observed, sometimes in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and because Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
In the 21st Century, the American experiment in self-governance is in profound crisis. The U.S. Constitution, originally designed to stabilize government and protect the People from abuse of government by a powerful few, has been stretched too thin by a vast and diverse population, outdated by ever-evolving trends and technologies, and systematically manipulated, undermined and weaponized by a cynical minority intent on grabbing permanent power and privileges for themselves at the expense of others. Over recent decades an anti-democratic alliance of super-rich oligarchs, religious zealots, and fearful ordinary people has arisen and grown more extreme and implacable, now threatening democratic self-governance and civilization as we know it.
As proof, let these facts be submitted to a candid world.
The electoral college—an undemocratic structure crafted centuries ago to protect the privileges and prerogatives of rural and slave states, has long outlived its usefulness and has in the last 25 years inflicted on the nation two presidents who failed to win the popular vote. The persistence of this injustice has no moral basis.
The U.S. Senate, designed to be similarly biased toward small and sparsely populated states, gives the residents of those states disproportionate influence. Witness the state of California, where 1 Senator represents 20 million people vs. the state of Wyoming, where 1 Senator represents just 300 thousand people. One state is more than 50 times as large as the other, yet Senators from those states have equal votes in Congress.
The U.S. House of Representatives is not comprised of members freely chosen by the people but has instead been perverted by openly politicized state-level machinations into a biased system where members of congress effectively choose their constituents, through systematically biased gerrymandering — the process of drawing political boundaries to reduce the voting power of some groups and increase the power of others.
These unjust structures have enabled another: the unapologetically extreme U.S. Supreme Court, deliberately tilted out of balance by chance and gamesmanship and subject to almost no meaningful control or oversight, has dropped precipitously in the public regard. As recently as the mid-1990s, public opinion of the Court was 80% positive. Today the Court’s extremist justices, radical decisions and widely-perceived corruption has reduced its public approval rating below 50%. This is due in no small part to sitting justices issuing lofty pronouncements about the value and importance of historical precedent, coupled with those same justices’ hypocritical and shameless rejection of that precedent whenever it suits them and their rich and powerful benefactors and puppetmasters. Extreme rulings by the imbalanced court have asserted, among other travesties, that:
⁃ Corporations should enjoy crucial privileges accorded to humans without bearing corresponding responsibilities; meanwhile, strong evidence exists that if corporations were people, they would be selfish, myopic psychopaths lacking human empathy, guilt, or remorse
⁃ We the people cannot protect the sanctity of our elections from the corrupting influence of dark money, perverting the government that is supposed to serve the people into a tool manipulated and weapon wielded by the rich & powerful against all others
⁃ We the people should have no right to choose the means we deem necessary to protect ourselves from the terror of regularized gun violence, a repeated trauma that devastates families and communities in the United States, with no equivalent anywhere else in the similarly developed world
⁃ Some Americans, like the kings explicitly rejected by the founders of the United States centuries ago, should not be subject to the rule of law but only to their own morality and judgement
⁃ We the people should not have to honor and respect legal treaties signed solemnly with and taken seriously by other sovereign people
⁃ Many other immoral Court decisions, indefensible to fair and balanced sensibilities
This long series of abuses by one illiberal faction within the United States has driven so many divisive wedges into the vast and diverse population of the country as to make a mockery of the name “United States.” The anti-democratic alliance has corrupted and twisted the once “United States” of American into a now Divided States of America.
Therefore it is with heavy hearts but clear minds that we resolve to embrace our right & duty to throw off such perverse and burdensome Government, and to build a new system to succeed where the current system has failed.
We, the states and jurisdictions below, hereby resolve to secede peacefully from the United States, taking with us the territory and wealth related by and within our borders, to create a new sovereign country that is responsive to and responsible for our own future to provide new Guards for our future security, advancement and happiness.
