2025 CrossFit Games Gender Classification Policy

2025 CrossFit Games Gender Classification Policy
The Issue
Pledge Your Support: CrossFit Is For Everyone
CrossFit has always been about community, inclusion, and participation. The CrossFit Open, in particular, has embodied these values by allowing athletes of all abilities, ages, genders, and fitness levels to throw down with their box mates and be part of something bigger than themselves. CrossFit is for everyone - but the new Gender Classification Policy threatens this foundational ethos.
The 2025 CrossFit Games Gender Classification Policy forces athletes to compete in divisions based on their gender assigned at birth, regardless of their gender identity or lived experience. This policy fails to recognise the diversity of athletes who make up the CrossFit community:
- Transgender Men are forced to compete in the women’s division, effectively disqualifying them if they undergo medically necessary testosterone therapy.
- Transgender Women are forced to compete in the men’s division, disregarding the fact that hormone therapy significantly reduces testosterone levels and athletic advantage. This exclusion is based on unfounded assumptions rather than science or fairness.
The CrossFit Open was designed to encourage box-level participation, allowing everyone to be part of the experience regardless of skill or identity. This new policy, however, disproportionately harms social and recreational athletes - the backbone of the CrossFit community - who participate to challenge themselves, bond with their community, and embrace the ethos of inclusivity.
This policy appears to be a knee-jerk reaction to political pressures in the US and disregards CrossFit’s global community. No transgender athletes are dominating elite levels of the sport. Blanket bans, along with problematic clauses such as 9.03, foster a harmful culture of "transvestigation" subjecting all athletes - cisgender and transgender - to invasive scrutiny if they do not conform to societal norms of femininity or masculinity.
We can do better.
Fairness in competition is vital, but it does not have to come at the cost of exclusion. Many sports organisations, including CrossFit itself in the past, have successfully balanced inclusion and integrity by using case-by-case evaluations for elite athletes. Blanket bans are unnecessary and harmful.
We call on CrossFit HQ to:
- Revise the Gender Classification Policy to allow transgender athletes to compete in divisions aligned with their gender identity.
- Use existing systems like hormone monitoring and Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) to ensure fairness for elite athletes.
- Open a dialogue with the transgender community to create policies that reflect the values of inclusion, diversity, and fairness.
Why This Matters
The CrossFit Open was created to bring the community together, celebrating every individual’s strength and resilience. Transgender athletes are part of this community. Excluding them from fair competition undermines the very principles that make CrossFit special.
By signing this petition, you’re pledging your support for:
- A CrossFit that welcomes all athletes, regardless of gender identity.
- A return to the core values of community, inclusion, and participation.
- Policies that protect fairness without resorting to discrimination.
Let’s remind CrossFit HQ that CrossFit is for everyone. No one should be banned from participation at any level. #CrossFitIsForEveryone
