2 weeks bereavement leave AND pay for parents experiencing pregnancy loss before 24 weeks

The Issue

Imagine losing your unborn child, then being forced back to work while your heart is breaking. This is the reality for countless parents who experience pregnancy loss before 24 weeks.

On 11th March 2025, the Government committed to including pre-24 week loss in bereavement leave legislation.  However, we still don't know what this will entail.

We at Magara Law call on the UK Government to introduce two weeks of paid bereavement leave for mothers and partners who experience pregnancy loss before 24 weeks. Pregnancy loss, whether early or later, is a devastating experience, yet many parents are left without the time and support they need to grieve properly.

A loss before 24 weeks is no less painful than a later loss and the emotional, physical and mental toll it takes on parents must be acknowledged. This petition seeks to ensure that grieving parents are given time to mourn, heal and process their emotions without the added stress of returning to work prematurely.

Providing paid bereavement leave recognises the significant impact of pregnancy loss and promotes better mental health and well-being for those affected. It also sends a compassionate message that the UK government understands the importance of allowing parents time to grieve and recover after such a heartbreaking experience.

This is not just about time off. It's about acknowledging the devastating emotional and physical trauma, and allowing parents to heal without the added burden of immediate work pressures. Grieving families deserve compassion, not forced returns

Sign this petition to support a policy change that will offer crucial support to grieving parents across the UK.
