A Palestinian monarchy committed to the welfare of the Palestinian people and to peace with Israel, backed by its own army, is the key to not only resolving the current situation in Gaza, but also toward implementation of a 2 state solution. The monarchy should be modelled after and have close ties with Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
Decades of approaches to the Israel – Palestine conflict have failed in part because they tried to apply Western values of democracy to a region that is better suited to a monarchy. The result has been very sporadic elections resulting in an ineffective Palestinian Authority and a terrorist Hamas (and other terrorist organizations), the latter committed to Israel’s destruction. Hamas has popular support throughout Palestine and would be a force to reckon with in any election. Persistent terrorism is an excuse used by Israel in deferring a 2 state solution. Why risk this?
A monarchy can quickly lead to a viable “day after” solution in Gaza and a subsequent 2 state solution. Most of the prosperous and stable countries in the regions have some form of monarchy – Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan. A Palestinian monarch can bring prosperity, freedom and peace to Palestine and the region. Palestine would become an independent state committed to peace with Israel and aligned with Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Israel.
What about governance? The monarch will be stepping into a situation of destruction, anarchy and terrorism. The Palestinian people will need to pledge their allegiance to the monarch. The monarch will also need an army, pledged to him/her, to deal with those who refuse to cede their authority. The monarch can then proceed with governing and rebuilding. Rebuilding will easily have global support. Governance must be committed to the principles of welfare of the Palestinian people, to peace with Israel and to regional peace.
