$15 minimum wage for all MSU employees

$15 minimum wage for all MSU employees
The Issue
Michigan State University should pay every employee at least $15.00 per hour.
The MSU Board of Trustees should adopt a resolution to raise the minimum wage for all student and affiliate employees to $15.00 hourly. The Board (BoT) should recognize the recent decision by the University of Michigan Board of Regents to raise a $15.00/hour minimum for student employees on their campus. The Board should follow the lead of other Big Ten schools: the University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin-Madison have taken initiative to raise the minimum wage for their employees.
With over 12,000 employees, adopting a $15 minimum wage has the potential to benefit thousands in the MSU community.
Tuition and rent costs continue to increase annually. Inflation continues to balloon the costs of essential goods and services. Yet, some MSU employees earn as little as $8.44 per hour. Adopting a $15 hourly wage is not a radical idea, nor would it make MSU a trailblazer in this matter. It is simply the right thing to do, and necessary for the livelihood of student-employees.
The Board should consider adopting a new and higher standard in the valuation of Michigan State University employees and their labor. Raising the minimum wage to $15 would uplift Michigan State University to the existing standards in place at comparable institutions.
The Board has the unique opportunity to contribute positively to Michigan State's reputation in the higher education community. With enrollment at an all-time high, and the endowment growing over $1 billion in the last 5 years, the University has a duty to allocate these resources for the betterment of student life.
