YOU ARE AMAZING! Remember this moment. It's a moment when Māori, Pakeha, First Nations Canadians, Australians, Americans, even people in the Netherlands & Finland signed in support of this petition against racism. Thank you. My heart feels less heavy than it did when I read Sir Bob Jones comments about my people. Our elders. Our children. Aku mihi mahana e hoa mā. My warmest gratitude friends. Ngai Māori who have signed - Tau kē. I can feel our ancestors walking behind us in full support. I'm so proud to be a wahine Māori & I know that you are proud of your Māoritanga too. Protect your mana with all that you have. It is the thing that keeps your chin up. Kia kaha tātou. Now let’s talk about our petition! 50,000 signs & it is clear that we collectively believe that a person who publishes Hate Speech of this nature should not be in an honour category. He should not have the mana of this title. "Sir" Bob Jones & many have tried to refute the fact that what he wrote was, in fact, Hate Speech however the definition of Hate Speech clearly states that it is: “speech which attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, or gender.” I think it’s fair to say that Jones’ published writings on NBR singled out a group of people based on race. Furthermore, I am concerned that The Human Rights Act 1993 (NZ) has been breached. Section 61 states that: "it’s unlawful for any person to publish or distribute written matter which is threatening, abusive, or insulting OR being matter or words likely to excite hostility against or bring into contempt any group of persons IN or who may be coming to New Zealand on the ground of the colour, race, or ethnic or national origins of that group of persons." Again, I think that’s exactly what he’s done. Ngai Māori, if you feel like your Human Rights have been breached then go to the Human Rights Commission website and register a complaint here: https://www.hrc.co.nz/complaint-form/ I have lodged my complaint. In regards to achieving the result of our petition, I have been speaking with 2 MP's for advice & I welcome any more support from MP's in Parliament who are interested in assisting us. This has happened quickly & despite the momentary distraction of a potential lawsuit I’m focused on the outcome we signed for. So, the first goal is to sit down with the Rt. Hon Jacinda Ardern who will then, if she sees cause, make a recommendation to the Queens representative, Governor General Dame Patsy Reedy. It is my understanding that it is in the Queens power only to revoke a Knighthood. It’s important to point out that a Knighthood has never been revoked in New Zealand but I feel that this could be a first. The Human Rights Act has been breached, recent sexist comments by Sir Bob Jones towards me further disrepute his character & a voice of 50,000 is quite a voice! It’s been wonderful to see our Māori leaders such as Dr Leonie Pihama writing and passing comment saying enough is enough. Yes, it is. Times up. Let’s get a result. Ngā mihi, Renae Maihi Ngapuhi/Te Arawa Mother of 1 Māori Son.
