124,000 deaths?! We demand UK Gov hold Car Manufacturers to Account for Dieselgate!

The Issue

Last year the UK Government revealed that 47 different car models by 11 manufacturers are suspected of deliberately cheating emissions test. These manufacturers are being accused of using 'cheat devices' to mask that their diesel engines were producing 2.2x as much toxic NOx pollution than is legally allowed.

A recent report shows that this additional pollution is linked to 124,000 excess deaths across the UK and Europe alone.

In the US, Volkswagen have already had to pay over $14.7bn in fines as a result of the damage they've done to the enviroment, the excess deaths they've caused and the financial burden they put on their customers.  But the UK Goverment have done nothing!

The Damage

The extra pollution equates to around 10.2 million diesel vehicles' worth of emissions, which is almost equal to the entire diesel population in the UK (11.57 million as of 2021).

A recent report suggests that around 124,000 excess deaths, 98,000 new cases of asthma in children and 15,000,000 sick days have all occured across the EU and the UK due to the illegally high Dieselgate emissions.

This same report estimates that the economic burden so far from these excess deaths is equal to €760 billion, with a further €430 billion in economic impacts expected between 2025 and 2040. This is a total of over €1.2TRILLION!

The Ask

So far, Australia, Canada, Germany, South Korea and the US have all implemented a mixture of recall orders for vehicles fitted with defeat devices and have agreed compensation payments for vehicle owners.

All we're asking is that the UK Government actually prioritise this issue. It's causing financial damage to the entire country, it's causing unknowable health damage all across the country and it's causing huge enviromental damage, yet we're trailing behind the rest of the world in dealing with this crisis.

We are calling for:

  1. Keir Starmer to order more rapid court dates for the group legal claims that are in play
  2. Keir Starmer to ensure appropriate reparations are paid by the manufacturers that used cheat devices, to fix the environmental damage they've caused.
  3. Keir Starmer to put in place far stricter regulatory monitoring processes to ensure this doesn't happen again
  4. and, finally, for Keir Starmer to launch an investigation into the levels of fraud from senior executives of the manufacturers using the cheat devices and to hold them to account!

Please, share this petition around if you agree that serious damage has been done and that serious action needs to be taken!

How do I know if I was affected?

If you've owned a diesel car that was made between 2008 and 2020, you may be entitled to compensation for this diesel gate scandal.

You do not have to have bought the car brand new, if you owned one of these cars (even if second hand) that were manufactured between 2008 and 2020 then you might be entitled to join one of the group claims. These claims are against the following companies:

  • BWM
