Against All Odds: A Story of Hope, Resilience, and the Power of One
When I launched this petition, I did so not from a place of power, but from a place of deep conviction, shaped by a lifetime of obstacles, pain, and a stubborn spark that refuses to go out.
Some days, like today, the weight of it all feels heavy. Chronic illness, fatigue, neurodivergence, these aren’t buzzwords for me; they are my everyday. I started this petition as my step towards change, and I am figuring things out as I go because I couldn't not do something.
And yet, what keeps me going is you, so far 77 of you who have signed, shared, and stood beside this petition in just 3 weeks or so! Thank you. Truly.
This week, I want to share with you the story of someone who reminds me why we rise, even when it feels impossible. I want to share a story to encourage you to fight for what you believe in.
Florence Mudzingwa was born in Zimbabwe with osteogenesis imperfecta—a rare condition that causes extremely fragile bones. Doctors told her mother she wouldn’t live past five months. But Florence defied the odds. She spent her early years mostly confined to a hospital bed, often in pain. Society expected her to remain invisible, voiceless, and dependent.
But Florence had a different plan.
She founded the Hope Resurrect Trust, supporting girls and women with disabilities to gain financial independence, leadership skills, and confidence. Her vision was clear: create nurturing environments where people are seen, supported, and empowered. She believed that with the right conditions, everyone has the potential to thrive.
And that is exactly what we’re calling for in this petition.
We're demanding a radical shift in how we treat young people, especially those who’ve been labelled, excluded, or broken by systems that were never built for their flourishing. Like Florence, we believe the right environment can unlock untapped potential.
We are calling for:
- Schools that are trauma-informed, relational, and rooted in creativity, calm, and connection.
- An end to age-based wage discrimination, equal pay for equal work.
- Real, accessible pathways for youth to explore entrepreneurship, creativity, and meaningful employment, especially for those the system has left behind.
Florence’s story proves that when you empower those on the margins, they don’t just survive, they lead. They build. They create change for everyone.
This petition is more than a call for change. It’s a declaration that those of us who’ve been told to sit down, quieten down, or wait until we’re “strong enough” or have the right tools and resources are already changing the world. Together.
