1,000 Voices For Our Veterans: Create a dedicated space for military students at AUC
The Issue
I come from a military family and, as a political science student, I feel deeply compelled to address the critical gaps within the Atlanta University Center (AUC). How do we honor legacy and invite innovation if the AUC doesn't have a dedicated space for military-affiliated students—those who have offered their service to a nation that often overlooks their sacrifices? It is time to redefine how we support those in uniform, embracing them as students first and ensuring their dual identity as scholars and service members is fully recognized within our community.
Amid a complex political landscape where those who serve are frequently marginalized or used as talking points, our students deserve a physical space where their unique experiences and perspectives are valued. Currently, military-affiliated students at the AUC—including active duty, reserves, veterans, and military dependents—lack a formal venue for advocacy, dialogue, and specialized support. This petition seeks to change that by establishing a dedicated Military Resource Center designed to uplift, recognize, and connect all students with a background in service.
Our mission is to bring together all branches of the military to create a unifying and empowering environment. Through this center, we will provide the "one-stop shop" resources necessary for success: professional development workshops, specialized counseling, mentorship programs, and career networking. These are the tools that will bridge the gap between military service and academic excellence.
Furthermore, this initiative serves a dual purpose: while it empowers military-related students, it also enriches the entire AUC community by fostering a deeper culture of diversity and inclusion. In light of persistent global challenges and heightened tensions, this space becomes a vital forum for dialogue, growth, and leadership.
Let's honor the legacy of all who serve by creating an innovative, welcoming space that supports their highest aspirations. Your signature helps reshape the AUC community and ensures that no student who has worn the uniform—or supported someone who does—is left to navigate their journey alone. Please sign and show your support for this crucial initiative.
