Update on Alexandria Township’s Tree Ordinance
On October 23rd, Alexandria Township’s Land Use Board's recommendations were presented to the Township Committee. Several residents also spoke, sharing their concerns, and experiences regarding the current ordinance.
The proposed amendments include removing the requirement for residents to submit applications or obtain permits for the following exemptions:
- Removal of dead, diseased, or storm-damaged trees
- Removal of trees that pose a hazard to persons or property
- Removal of trees to eliminate invasive species such as multiflora rose, thorn apple, autumn olive, etc.
- Removal of trees on properties used as a nursery, garden center, Christmas tree farm, or orchard
- Tree cutting performed as part of timber stand improvement under a state-approved Woodland or Forest Management Plan
- Removal of trees on farm properties with a documented Right to Farm Act exemption and a state-approved Woodland or Forest Management Plan
The Land Use Board also recommended increasing fines for residents who fail to submit applications when required, or who violate the ordinance.
Unfortunately, two Township Committee members were absent that evening. However, residents were assured that the Committee will review the Land Use Board’s recommendations and residents concerns, and determine whether any changes will be made to the current ordinance.
