I'm a student in Illinois, and despite being homeschooled, I have a passion for sports, a passion I wish to pursue at my local public high school. Unfortunately, the current rules prohibit homeschoolers from participating in sports unless they attend a class in the school. This is a personal struggle for me and many others who face similar barriers to pursuing their interests because of their educational setting. Countless homeschoolers are being excluded from vital extracurricular activities, which are essential for a well-rounded education and personal development. Statistics indicate that there are approximately 2.5 million homeschoolers in the United States, as of Spring 2019 (National Home Education Research Institute, 2019). Without an adjustment of the current rules, a significant portion of this population is missing out on opportunities for social interaction, team building, and competition often found in school sports. Therefore, we urge Illinois State Education Board to reconsider and amend these requirements, to allow homeschool students participation in public school sports without the obligation of in-school attendance. Life opportunities should never be limited by one's choice of education. Sign the petition now, support homeschoolers' rights to compete in public school sports.
