Goldfish scooping is a popular feature of the annual Goldfish Festival held by Tokyo's Edogawa Ward. (In 2025, the festival will be held on 19 and 20 July.)
However, this traditional pastime has been called into question from a modern animal welfare perspective. We want to raise a review of goldfish scooping, in which many goldfish end up short-lived.
Goldfish scooping may be a fun event for the participants. However, for the goldfish, it is a very demanding experience.
They are placed in small plastic containers and can become stressed and even injured after being scooped repeatedly.
It is also estimated that goldfish need two litres of water per centimetre of body length. Goldfish are placed in small plastic bags when they are taken home, where they are exposed to acidity and changes in water temperature caused by the outside air.
The following alternatives can be considered as ways of showing kindness to animals while respecting the culture of Edogawa Ward.
-Virtual goldfish scooping experience using VR technology
-Super ball and glowing toy scooping
-Toy goldfish scooping
We ask for your understanding and cooperation to make the Goldfish Festival an animal-friendly event. Please join us in signing this petition.
