(English below)

An open letter to snack makers.

Currently, many popular snacks in Japan make heavy use of animal-derived ingredients such as chicken bouillon powder and milk powder, along with additives including seasonings (amino acids, etc.), colorings, flavorings, and preservatives.

While these enhance taste and shelf life, they also present the following issues.

  • Egg allergy is the leading cause of food allergies in Japan, affecting nearly one in ten young children.
  • Crustacean (shrimp and crab) allergy is said to be the number one cause of food allergies in adults, with fish ranked third, so products using shrimp flavoring or seafood extracts are not unrelated either.
  • Milk allergy is found in roughly one in every hundred elementary, junior high, and high school students.

There are few products that vegans, vegetarians, and people who avoid animal-derived ingredients for religious reasons can choose with confidence, and the number of consumers who wish to limit their intake of additives is also growing.

In Japan, eight items : egg, milk, wheat, shrimp, crab, buckwheat, peanut, and walnut , are officially designated as "specified allergens" subject to mandatory labeling, and twenty more items, including chicken, pork, beef, salmon, and mackerel, are designated as "quasi-specified allergens" with recommended labeling. In other words, the national government formally recognizes these risks.

In Germany, where I, Kazuna Yamamoto, the initiator of this petition, live, many sweets are vegan- and vegetarian-friendly. In potato chips, cookies, candies, and gummies, many animal-derived ingredients are being gradually replaced with plant-based alternatives.

By doing so, rather than separating products into "vegan" and "allergy-friendly" categories, a single product can be made safe for anyone to pick up.

And beyond that, by replacing animal-derived ingredients with plant-based ones — perhaps only a small amount at first — fewer animals may have to be sacrificed.

We therefore kindly ask for the following.

  1. Gradually reduce animal-derived ingredients such as chicken powder and milk powder, and increase the number of product lines made without animal-derived ingredients.
  2. Gradually reduce additives (seasonings, colorings, flavorings, preservatives, and so on).
Advance the development and adoption of plant-based umami ingredients (such as kombu, shiitake, and yeast extract) to replace animal-derived extracts like chicken bouillon powder.
  3. Clearly indicate on packaging which ingredients are not used, and whether the product is vegan-friendly.
We believe this is not only a matter of consideration for consumers, but also a response to a growing market.

The domestic plant-based food market is forecast to expand from approximately 34 billion yen in 2021 to approximately 73 billion yen by 2025. Vegetarian and vegan foreign tourists visiting Japan number between 1.45 and 1.9 million per year, forming a market worth 45 to 60 billion yen in dining expenditures. Combined with the domestic vegan and vegetarian population (an estimated 2.4%), this is by no means a small opportunity.

A society in which people with allergies as well as vegans and vegetarians can choose sweets with peace of mind is also a society that accommodates dietary diversity, and we believe it will lead to greater product value both in Japan and abroad, and to new market opportunities.

Thank you very much for your consideration.
