[ქართული ვერსია იხილეთ ქვემოთ] Hope you have had a great summer!  Our efforts against the plan to build an unnecessary and destructive new road across the High Caucasus Mountains in Northeast Georgia succeeded in slowing down the project significantly.  All information we have indicates that the government has set aside for now at least part of the project -- the idea of building a road to connect Shatili to Omalo, across Borbalo Mountain and the Tusheti Protected Areas, which was certainly the craziest and most destructive part of the plan. However, while assuring donors and members of Parliament that it was not proceeding for the time being on any new roads in this area, the Roads Department has nonetheless continued to sneak forward on the Juta – Roshka section of the road – even building several hundred meters beyond the extent of the current permit, according to locals.  The new Juta – Roshka road, while only 16 kilometers long, would cross over the Sadzele Pass at over 3,000 meters, invading one of Georgia’s most treasured and pristine trekking routes. Because the Tusheti section of the larger road project is suspended, for now at least, stopping this highly destructive Juta – Roshka link is our most immediate priority. Just this week, we finally got hold of the detailed map of the Juta - Roshka route – a document that the Roads Department has not previously wanted to make public. The map shows that the new road will cross into the existing boundaries of the Kazbegi National Park, and will cross for several kilometers through the very center of the planned expansion of the Kazbegi National Park. Please write to Kakha Kuchava, Chairman of the Environmental Committee of Parliament (garemo@parliament.ge) and to the Ministry of Environmental Protection (eia@mepa.gov.ge) to  expression your opposition to the Juta – Roshka road!
