මෑත කාලයේ දී, හම්බන්තොට ප්‍රදේශයේ දිග හැරෙන ඛේදජනක තත්ත්වය, වනජීවී දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ අලි සංරක්ෂණ අධ්‍යක්ෂ උඩුමා ලෙබ්බේ තවෆික් ඇතුළු බොහෝ සැලකිලිමත් පුද්ගලයින්ගේ අවධානයට ලක්ව ඇත. හම්බන්තොට හි ආදරණීය අලි ඇතුන් ඔවුන්ගේ නිජබිම් වාසස්ථානයෙන් අසංවේදී ලෙස ඉවත් කිරීම ගෝලීය පාරිසරික නීති සහ සත්ව හිංසන පනත පැහැදිලිව උල්ලංඝනය කිරීමක් බව මම දැඩි හදවතකින් සටහන් කරමි.

 

අලි ඇතුන් සියවස් ගණනාවක් තිස්සේ අපගේ පරිසර පද්ධතියේ සහ සංස්කෘතියේ අනිවාර්ය අංගයක් වී ඇති අතර, ඔවුන් බලහත්කාරයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීම මෙම සමතුලිතතාවයට බාධා කරනවා පමණක් නොව, ඔවුන්ගේ පැවැත්මට ද තර්ජනයක් වේ. මෙම අතිශය භයානක ක්‍රියාව මෙම තේජාන්විත ජීවීන් ආරක්ෂා කරන ජාත්‍යන්තරව පිළිගත් ප්‍රමිතීන් නොසලකා හරින අතර ක්ෂණික ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ සහ වගවීමේ දැඩි අවශ්‍යතාවය ඉස්මතු කරයි.

 

විද්‍යාත්මක අධ්‍යයනයන් පෙන්වා දී ඇත්තේ අලි ඇතුන් ඔවුන් ජීවත් වන පරිසර පද්ධතිවල ජෛව විවිධත්වය පවත්වා ගැනීම සඳහා තීරණාත්මක කාර්යභාරයක් ඉටු කරන බවයි. බීජ විසුරුවා හැරීමෙන් සහ ශාක වර්ධනයට පහසුකම් සැලසීමෙන්, ඔවුන් ගණන් කළ නොහැකි අනෙකුත් විශේෂවල වාසස්ථාන සඳහා සහාය වේ. ඔවුන්ගේ නිජබිම් වාසස්ථානවලින් ඔවුන් ඉවත් කිරීම ආපසු හැරවිය නොහැකි පාරිසරික හානියක් සහ අපගේ ස්වාභාවික ලෝකයට යටින් පවතින ජෛව විවිධත්වයේ පරිහානියට හේතු විය හැක.

 

ඊටත් වඩා නරක දෙය නම්, මෙම ඉවත් කිරීමේ ක්‍රියාවලියට බොහෝ විට කම්පන සහගත හා දැඩි ක්‍රම ඇතුළත් වන අතර, ඒවා සත්ව හිංසන පනතේ දක්වා ඇති මූලධර්මවලට සෘජුවම පටහැනි වන අතර සම්බන්ධ වන අලි ඇතුන්ට අනවශ්‍ය ආතතියක් හා හානියක් සිදු කරයි. මෙය අලි ඇතුන්ගේ භෞතික යහපැවැත්මට තර්ජනයක් වනවා පමණක් නොව, අප වනජීවීන්ට සලකන ආකාරය පිළිබඳ සදාචාරාත්මක ප්‍රශ්න ද මතු කරයි.

 

මෙම තත්වයේ බරපතලකම හඳුනාගෙන උඩුමා ලෙබ්බේ තවෆික් වහමා සේවයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීමෙන් වහාම පියවර ගන්නා ලෙස මම ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජයෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිමි. එවැනි ක්‍රියාවක් පාරිසරික නීති සහ සදාචාරාත්මක ප්‍රමිතීන් ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට මෙන්ම වනජීවී සංරක්ෂණ උත්සාහයන් කෙරෙහි මහජන විශ්වාසය යථා තත්ත්වයට පත් කිරීමට පැහැදිලි කැපවීමක් පෙන්නුම් කරයි.

 

මෙම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය ජීවීන්ට තවදුරටත් හානි වැළැක්වීමට සහ පරිසරයට අපගේ වගකීම් තහවුරු කිරීමට, වනජීවීන් සහ අපගේ ග්‍රහලෝකය ගැන සැලකිලිමත් වන සියලු දෙනාගෙන් මම හම්බන්තොට අලි ඝාතනය වහාම නතර කරන ලෙස ඉල්ලා සිටීමට මා හා එක්වන ලෙස ඉල්ලා සිටිමි. මෙම තේජාන්විත සතුන්ගේ සහ ඔවුන්ගේ වාසස්ථානවල ස්වාභාවික පරිශුද්ධභාවය ආරක්ෂා කරන ලෙස බලධාරීන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටින ඔබේ අත්සන වෙනසක් කළ හැකිය. කරුණාකර අදම මෙම තීරණාත්මක කාරණයට අත්සන් කර සහාය දෙන්න.

 

In recent times, the tragic situation unfolding in Hambantota has caught the attention of many concerned individuals, including myself, Uduma Lebbe Tawafik, the Director of Elephant Conservation at the Department of Wildlife. It is with a heavy heart that I witness the insensitive eviction of the beloved elephants from Hambantota from their native habitat, a clear violation of global environmental laws and the Animal Cruelty Act.

 

Elephants have been an integral part of our ecosystem and culture for centuries, and their forced eviction not only disrupts this balance but also threatens their very survival. This egregious action disregards internationally recognized standards protecting these majestic creatures and highlights a dire need for immediate reforms and accountability.

 

Scientific studies have shown that elephants play a critical role in maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystems in which they reside. By dispersing seeds and facilitating plant growth, they support the habitats of countless other species. Removing them from their native environment can result in irreversible ecological damage and a weakening of the biodiversity that underpins our natural world.

 

Worse still, this eviction process often involves traumatic and harsh methods, directly contravening the principles set out in the Animal Cruelty Act and causing undue stress and harm to the elephants involved. This not only jeopardizes the physical wellbeing of the elephants but also raises ethical questions about our treatment of wildlife.

 

I urge the Sri Lankan government to acknowledge the gravity of this situation and take immediate action by removing Uduma Lebbe Tawafik from the Wahama service. Such measures would demonstrate a clear commitment to upholding environmental laws and ethical standards, as well as restoring public faith in wildlife conservation efforts.

 

To prevent further harm to these essential creatures and to uphold our responsibilities towards the environment, I appeal to all those who care about wildlife and our planet to join me in calling for an immediate halt to the eviction of the Hambantota elephants.
