Our water bodies are under assault!
The Lakes of Karnataka face extinction due to our ruthless politicians, who intend to get rid of the Lake Buffer Zones that protect the lakes. The Govt has introduced a Bill in legislature that will reduce the Lake Buffer Zones and will also allow constructions in the lake buffer, thus making the lake buffers non-existent.
And the Govt has also issued a notification to do the same to Rajakaluve Buffer Zones. It appears our lawmakers are ignorant about the ecological damage that these moves will cause. And neither have they bothered to get experts' opinion, nor hold Public Consultation on a move that will have larges scale impact on the state.
This bill if passed into law, will spell doom for nearly 45,000 lakes, causing unimaginable damage to the state's ecology and environment, harming crores of trees, negatively impacting biodiversity amounting to billions of living beings, wrecking groundwater, farming, livelihoods of lakhs of farmers and fishermen, and the food security of crores of people, apart from destroying the foundation of the state - its economy! It may create a state-wide water, ecological and economic crisis, leading to water wars, mass migrations, and worsen the climate crisis that the state is already grappling with. The state is already witnessing severe farm distress; with this it will intensify further.
We have launched a separate petition to focus only on this issue, since it will have large scale consequences for every one of us, and future generations.
